Kira Phoenix K'inan is a London-based, internationally active artist who works with a variety of techniques. K'inan studied sculpture, installation, photography and performance at Central Saint Martins, from which she graduated in 2010 at the top of her class. In 2015, K'inan graduated with a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art (RCA), where she specialized in glass. During her time at university, K'inan developed several new techniques for glass drawing.
Kira Phoenix K’inan was born in Hong Kong in 1988. At the age of ten, her family moved to Devon, England, in order for K'inan to attend the international Grenville College Boarding School and receive special support for her dyslexia.
As a teenager, K’inan got to select a path for her upcoming studies; she followed up her initial studies with two years studying art, photography, media and film at Brockenhurst College.
At the age of 17, K’inan entered Central Saint Martins (CSM). She sampled a variety of subjects in her basic courses that first year, including sculpture. Though she had originally intended to study film for the rest of the year, she was so much more drawn to the hands-on approach of sculpture compared with artistic discussions that she opted to immerse herself in sculpture instead, which led all the way to her degree, a Bachelor of Art (Hons) at CSM.
In 2012, K’inan spent six months traveling around Asia, which provided abundant inspiration that became a springboard for “Intervolve” and the glass drawings she would ultimately make. K’inan decided to pursue a master’s degree in the subject of glass at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. While studying at RCA, she developed several glass techniques as well as an interest in ceramic slip casting. K’inan was offered a residency at the University College of Arts, Crafts & Design in Stockholm by the Anglo-Swedish Society, which she accepted. Her glass techniques have evolved even further here: she developed new drawing techniques, increased the size of her work and experimented with color.
K’inan graduated in 2015 with a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art, London, in the subject of glass.
