It is with great pleasure that S.P.G presents Marie Capaldi’s fourth exhibition in the gallery. The fascination of the double and the symmetrical has followed her painting through 23 years; after the birth of her twin daughters. They have been portrayed in arranged poses with colourful clothes, in changing environments and different ages. She lets every day life resonate into her image-world, which is filled with furthermore duplicates: cups, mirrors, cats, flowers, furniture. Capaldi uses neither repetition nor reprises, she paints pairs. Her home environment serves as a foundation for the simultaneously quiet and intense scenes that are depicted in high-contrast palettes. The twin daughters are now young adults and have left home. Capaldi has to rely on the selfies they send her, and can no longer dictate the composition of the pictures. She receives and paints. The title Refulgens refers to a reflection, as Capaldi’s own youth mirrors in her daughters. It’s like entering a crystal saloon, and suddenly see yourself flicker by in a reflection.
